Well I returned yet again to start my season at the 31st Annual Tri-California Wildflower Long Course Triathlon. Our team had a pretty cool setup at the race this weekend, but I was on a super tight budget, had to rent a car, and make the trip in less than 24 hours.
I won't make this report very long, as I was less than thrilled with my day. I had high expectations and hopes for this race. Unfortunately I didn't plan on running in 100 degree heat and didn't manage it well. That course owned my ass on the day - no excuses - I will be back though.

Much slower than last year by almost 3 minutes - though it was supposedly 200 yards longer this time is not acceptable. I don't know if it was anxiety being my first race of the year or what. Must swim more and start my weekly open water swims. NOT ACCEPTABLE

This is the only leg that went to plan for me Saturday. I had a plan and executed it flawlessly. My goal was to come out of the swim and take the first two miles easy to settle my heart rate enough from the swim to be able to start taking in some nutrition. I wanted to keep my effort high zone 2 to low zone 3 until the race turned right on Jolon. Any downhill that exceeded 30mph in the first 19 miles I coasted to conserve energy. Once we turned right on Jolon Rd the course is pretty consistent for the next 14 miles.

What I would Do Different: I would carry a 3rd bottle of Perform in a race this hot. Kevin and I believe my dehydration started on the bike and sprung its head on the run since its harder to get hydrated on the run. From now on I will carry 3 bottles on any race predicted to be 85 or warmer.

Long story short I got about 7 miles into the run and was done. I needed more fluids earlier in the race.

What is up next? Next month I plan to do the Vineman Monte Rio race and the Reservoir Triathlon before Vineman in July.
